Man of Steel – Film Review

For the start of the now titled DC Extended Universe, which is DC’s version of what Marvel Entertainment is doing with it’s Marvel Cinematic Universe begins with Superman. This entry I had a mixed reaction to overall. The cast is great. The acting is very well done but I feel where the movie falls short is in the editing. The overall story I didn’t have a huge issue with it was just mainly towards the end of the picture with some visual decisions I didn’t agree with and thought was over the top. The music from Hans Zimmer was over the top at some points.

With the action sequences and the music being at such a saturated volume it became noise at some points were it seemed silly. Of course these are aliens aren’t of Earth and they wouldn’t behave and perform action sequences as the same way as humans. The Zod and Superman fight at the end could have been cut down a bit. It was too long and felt exhausting. They could have tightened it up and it would have saved a lot of grief for the audience. The darker plate didn’t help this extended sequence feel too daunting.

You will give the people of Earth an ideal to strive towards. They will race behind you, they will stumble, they will fall. But in time, they will join you in the sun, Kal. In time, you will help them accomplish wonders.

Henry Cavill is a stand out as Superman. You do genuinely feel for the character through his struggles. A very relatable character to the sense of feeling like an outsider wanting to be good person. The rest of the cast is strong with Michael Shannon being Zod as the main antagonist. He wasn’t the run of the mill villain, he actually had character. Amy Adams did a good version of Lois Lane that is more balls to wall force in journalism.

I did like the touches of easter eggs in the film with Wayne Enterprises, LexCorp and Supergirl. I’m glad they didn’t overbuild the world to where it felt it took over the film but it was just enough to give you a picture of Clark Kent’s World. Overall I would say its a solid entry that needs a few tweaks and I’m looking forward to the future entries of the DCEU.
