Star Trek Beyond – Film Review

Star Trek is a franchise that doesn’t have the attention as much as Star Wars in the age where the franchise is back in action. This film entry is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Star Trek franchise, but also unfortunately remembering Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin who have passed away.

This picture feels like an original series episode on the big screen. It’s been a long time since I’ve felt a Star Trek film was A. Really good and B. Felt like it was being itself as Star Trek. 2009’s reboot felt more Star Wars than Star Trek and Into Darkness didn’t know what it wanted to be. It was more of a half remake of Wrath of Khan. This film felt like it was trying new things and celebrating what had come before it on why we explore space and though it might feel mundane it is worth the adventure.

The tribute to not only Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin were both very poignant but the tribute to the 50 years celebrating the series was perfect. It really touched me as a Star Trek fan on why this series has lasted so long. Though it might not have as much cultural splash as other Science Fiction franchise, but it has a lot of durability with its hopefulness of a better tomorrow.

The pacing is a little slow in the beginning of the film but it slowly builds with action and tension throughout the film. I like the change of pace between this film and JJ Abrams films. It feels less abrasive and striking. The lense flares were toned down a lot. Also, Michael Giacchino’s score was solid. Not too many new entries that were very memorable but still holds up. I heard the main Star Trek theme more than the other new tracks.

Overall I would definitely recommend seeing this if you’re a Star Trek fan, a fan of Sci-Fi and are looking for something to hold them over till Suicide Squad.
