Creed – Film Review

As someone who has not seen any of the “Rocky” films I went into this with limited knowledge. This spin off film was able to explain to me things that have happened in previous films without me being lost or missing out on information to make me get the whole picture to the franchise. I applauded its use of Sylvester Stallone throughout the film to bring the character full circle and train one of his toughest opponents son. Stallone had a great character arc throughout the film that made use of his time and was worthy to be brought back onto the screen.

Michael B. Jordan shines in his role as Adonis Creed. He is a very complex character dealing with a multitude of adversities between the loss of his mother and the death of his father before birth. With him being a child born out of an accident and him having to deal with the knowledge of being thought of internally a mistake. Ryan Coogler does a great job at directing & writing this film. His style of introducing the fighters was unique and visually interesting.

One step at a time. One punch at a time. One round at a time.

The negatives I had with the film were mainly with the 2nd act where it became overly dramatic. It could have been toned down a little. The plot points were fine it was just over done a little. I did like the ending how it wasn’t a picture perfect wrap up and that it gave the characters challenges to overcome. Stand outs for the film are Tessa Thompson who plays the love interest Bianca. She is very well realized character who helps balance out Michael B Jordan’s Adonis Creed.

Overall I thought this was a great way as a Reboot-quel (Sequel/Reboot) to the “Rocky” franchise and give it a new organic life that continues the story in the modern age. I’m looking forward to seeing what they do with this franchise and hope it doesn’t flounder like the Rocky franchise did for a couple of entries.
