Mission Impossible: Fallout – Film Review

Tom Cruise shows off his impressive commitments yet again to show he is the best in the business when it comes to delivering an action film. This entry which I don’t think surpasses ‘Rogue Nation’ does enough to complete the story that was told in that film. This really is the culmination of all the previous films from MI:III onward. Though I don’t think this is the end of Tom Cruise’s run on the series, it does feel like both a closing of a chapter and a start of a new book with the team at the end of the film.

Christopher McQuarrie does a great job with his directing to make an action packed blockbuster that is not only smart but highly entertaining. Kudos to both him and Cruise for doing all of those stunts and making the action feel as real as possible. There were some great memorable action sequences including the Helicopter chase, the Halo jump and the motorcycle chase in Paris. It is refreshing to see a blockbuster that doesn’t use CGI and green screen as a handicap in order to deliver spectacular action.

“Your mission, should you *choose* to accept it.” I wonder, did you ever choose not to? The end you’ve always feared is coming. And the blood will be on your hands. The fallout of all your good intentions.

Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames, and Michelle Monaghan all deliver as Ethan’s team and former wife. Angela Bassett and Henry Cavill are great additions to the franchise. Henry Cavill definitely shined as August Walker, CIA assassin. His plot I did enjoy, especially with the twists that came with the character. The setting and background for the villains in the film I was glad the advertising didn’t completely spoil.

The only problems I had with this film were mainly its predictability and knowing that everything would work out in one way or another. Though some of it wasn’t too cumbersome of causing me to not be entertained. I would have liked a bit more complexity in the writing, but there were more twists and turns that kept my attention. Overall it’s a great action thrill ride that has been worth the wait. This film is meant to be seen on IMAX screens and anything less doesn’t do it justice. I hope McQuarrie sticks on as a producer while another filmmaker has a chance to tell a new story with these characters.
