Kubo and the Two Strings – Film Review

Laika created a film with such heart and passion that I haven’t seen in awhile. The animation is phenomenal across the board. I couldn’t believe this was all done in stop motion. I have such an appreciation for the artistry that was done to produce this film. The character designs and the artistic choices are so visually strong and beautiful.

If you must blink, do it now. – Kubo

My only negatives for the film is that the plot was pretty straightforward and obvious with it’s reveals. I wish they had done more with the storytelling to add to the quality of the animation. I wish they had cast more Asian voice actors in the film to bring more authenticity to the film. Charlize Theron did a good job but I could tell it was Matthew MCconaughey when his voice came up. George Takei could have been better used.

Overall I hope that Laika does more films with stop motion animation with their beautiful visuals, they just need more depth in storytellings. They should also reconsider their casting to make sure they don’t think about just name talent only.
