Thor: Ragnarok – Film Review
For a film franchise that has tried 3 different directions of tone to find a match with its character — it finally found it with the right creative vision with director Taika Waititi. Chris Hemsworth’s strength is being a comedian and Taika gets it. The way they utilize the humor of the situation makes the ride of the film so entertaining. The comedic spin that the film has gives it such a vibrant life to it — as does the visuals adapted from the Jack Kirby comics.
My only negatives with the film is that it did feel like two larger stories put together to form one story that could have been separated. I wish that they had spent more time on Asgard to flesh out the history rather than braize through it. Though the problem with having the Hulk’s story line infused with Ragnarok is not a fault of Marvel with Universal Studios having the right to refusal to distribute a Hulk standalone film — this was the best option that worked out for the better for them.
The new additions to the MCU including Hela, Valkyrie, Korg and Meik were well established. Hela has some great moments taking on Thor and Loki throughout the film. Valkyrie is a great new female heroine to the MCU. I liked her backstory and her overall character arc. I hope to see more of her in the MCU. Loki had some better moments in this film than the previous film. The comedy landed better for him. He had a fair few good one liners.
Thor had the most improvement in the film and his character design by the end felt very refreshing to where the character could start from there with a whole new trilogy. The Thor character has more ground to cover than Iron Man or Captain America to warrant a necessary new trilogy with either one of the legacy replacements. The score by Mark Mothersbaugh was a true highlight. The beats and sounds he used in the electronic music really helped give a great fresh tone to the overall film.
Overall I would say this was such a great high to leave on for the Thor trilogy of films that I hope that Chris Hemsworth is able to make more after the fourth Avengers outing.
I tried to start a revolution… but I didn’t print enough pamphlets!
