Deadpool 2 – Film Review

Sequels to comedies are hard. Sequels of movies that were groundbreaking phenomenons are even harder. Deadpool 2 has a lot to live up to in order to please the masses. What the film success in is that it builds off the first film with the relationship between Wade and Vanessa. Though they do something that is a bit unpopular with the character and I agree it is not as helpful to push forward this female character, but it doesn’t detract from the overall film. Regardless their chemistry is palpable.

Cable, Fire Fist and Domino were the standout new characters added to the franchise to expand the roster of characters and to introduce, X-Force. I was glad that this film didn’t feel like an X-Force film and it stayed being a Deadpool movie. I was afraid of that most of all with all the promotional material and trailers showcasing a bunch of the team members. The X-Force mutant characters were well executed and Peter was a hilarious comical joke.

Fuck Wolverine. First he rides my coattails with the R-rating, and then, that hairy motherfucker ups the ante by dying! What a dick! Well, guess what, Wolvie? I’m dying in this movie.

I really enjoyed the choices on the soundtrack including Celine Dion’s “Ashes” in the opening credits, “9 to 5”, and “Take On Me”. There were a lot of emotional moments in the film that landed strong. With some of the music cue’s from these songs and the score by Tyler Bates it was a strong balance. There were a couple of scenes in the film that stick with me that make this film more memorable than the first film. Though the action is more memorable in the first than this film, I equally enjoyed both the same.

Though a lot of the newness the franchise brought audiences in 2016, this film builds upon that foundation to deliver a solid follow up that moves the story forward, brings in some characters who will be fan favorites, and have some great comedic jokes that will keep you rolling in your seat.
